Matthew’s Smokehouse & Deli, formerly the Deer Harbor Inn Restaurant, is owned & operated by Matthew “Chef” Carpenter. Moved to the San Juan Islands with his parents & siblings when he was just 3 years old, Matthew called the Deer Harbor Inn his home when his parents took over the restaurant, then a delicious seafood & steak joint. It was run for years by his parents, & then taken over by Matthew & his brother as the same restaurant, then in 2020 was transitioned to the delicious smokehouse barbecue joint it is today with Matthew as sole proprietor.

Slinging breakfast burritos by morning & brisket by night, Matthew is joined by his wife, Emily, & their four sons, Kaiden, Kirin, Eli, & Finn.

  • We will be OPEN FOR THANKSGIVING! We will be serving a traditional Thanksgiving meal only (sorry, no BBQ for this one day!). We do have heaters on the deck & two fire pits on the lawn that will be roaring, weather permitting, & otherwise you may want to call ahead for your Thanksgiving meal to go! We can’t wait to be a part of your holiday!
  • Covid-19 Update With our spacious seating outdoors on the restaurant deck (with heaters!), fire pits & seating on the lawn, & picnic benches in our apple orchard, as well as having our staff continuously wipe down surfaces, we are here to serve you & create a safe environment for you to enjoy your meals & set your worries aside.
